Architectural Services in Austin
Carolyn Van Meter Architecture offers a focused set of residential services across central Austin: custom homes, whole-home remodels and additions, and historic bungalow renovations. We take on a small number of projects each year so the principal architect stays directly involved from first meeting through final punch list.

Custom Home Architect, Austin
New Custom Homes
We design new custom homes for clients who want a house that fits their site, their family, and the way they actually live. The process starts with a careful read of the lot (orientation, views, trees, neighborhood character, and code constraints) and moves through schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration. We work with a short list of trusted Austin builders and consultants we can recommend if you don't already have a team.

Home Remodel & Addition Architect, Austin
Whole-Home Remodels & Additions
Most of our projects start with a house the owners already love (a 1940s bungalow, a mid-century ranch, a 90s family home) and a clear sense that it isn't quite working anymore. Remodels and additions are some of the most rewarding work we do because the constraints sharpen the design. We bring the same level of discipline to a back-of-house addition as to a new build: site analysis, sun and views, scale relative to the neighborhood, and detailing that reads as part of the original house.

Historic Home Architect, Travis Heights & central Austin
Historic Bungalow Renovations
Travis Heights, Hyde Park, and central Austin's historic neighborhoods are full of bungalows that deserve thoughtful renovation rather than tear-down. We help homeowners modernize these houses for current life (new kitchens, primary suites, family rooms, energy-efficient systems) while preserving the proportions, details, and street presence that make them worth keeping. We're familiar with Austin's historic district considerations and permitting flow.

How to hire an architect in Austin
Process & What to Expect
Hiring an architect for the first time can feel opaque. Our process is intentionally simple: an initial conversation about your project, site, and goals; a fee proposal; a kickoff workshop on the site if possible; then schematic design, design development, construction documents, bidding, and construction administration. We're a small firm by choice so Carolyn stays directly involved at every phase. See the Process page for a fuller walkthrough.
